EPA extends comment period for Maywood Superfund site

By S.P. Sullivan/NJ.com

MAYWOOD — Members of the public now have until October 22 to offer comment on work being done at the Maywood Chemical Company Superfund site, officials announced.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency announced a $17-million cleanup project at the site, which includes portions of Maywood and Rochelle Park, last month.

Between 1916 and 1955, the chemical company processed thorium, a radioactive chemical, leading to contamination of the soil and ground water. It's now owned by the Stepan Company, which is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to remediate the site under supervision of the EPA.

That work includes removing metal drums that once held solvents and other chemicals, and carting off and treating contaminated soil. Harmful chemical vapors are being removed with a special vacuum, according to their plans.

The Army Corps of Engineers is also working to remediate groundwater contamination in the area. More information on the project is available on the EPA's website: http://epa.gov/region02/superfund/npl/maywood/.
