Authorities: Two Maywood garage fires intentionally set
The Record

MAYWOOD — Two early morning garage fires over the weekend were intentionally set, including one that damaged cars parked underneath an apartment building where people were sleeping, the authorities said Monday.

No one was hurt in the fires, which were reported one after another on Sunday, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a release.

The police and firefighters responded at 5:30 a.m. to a fire in a detached apartment complex garage at 5 Hammel Place, he said. As firefighters were putting out that fire, which caused several containers stored in the garage to explode, they received an alarm for another fire at an apartment building at 8 Windsor Court.

That fire, in a garage underneath the building, destroyed one vehicle and damaged others, Molinelli said.

“The apartment building above the garage was occupied with numerous tenants at the time of the fire,” Molinelli said, adding that the fire’s location created the potential for people to be injured or killed.

Anyone with information may call the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office anonymous tips line at (201) 226-5532 or the Maywood Police at (201) 845-8800.
