Final official election results Monday showed Assemblyman Tim Eustace clinging to a slim 54-vote lead over his closest Republican challenger Rochelle Park Mayor Joseph Scarpa in the District 38 legislative race.

Scarpa could not be reached for comment Monday on whether he intends to ask for a recount. On election night, he said he likely would seek a recount. He has until Wednesday to do so.

County Clerks in Bergen and Passaic counties certified results that showed Democratic Paramus Councilman Joseph Lagana as the leading vote getter with 26,277 in the tight race for the district’s two assembly seats, followed by Eustace, D-Maywood, with 26,019.

Scarpa finished third with 25,965 votes, followed by Republican Joan Fragala, a former principal of Lodi High School, with 25,835 votes.

While Eustace led by 644 in the 12 Bergen County towns in the district, Scarpa chalked up a 590 vote lead in Hawthorne, the lone Passaic County town in the district.

The other towns are Bergenfield, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hasbrouck Heights, Lodi, Maywood, New Milford, Oradell, Paramus, River Edge, Rochelle Park and Saddle Brook.
