Palmer Avenue residents without power after two trees fall on houses

Two large oak trees fell on three houses on Palmer Avenue in Maywood during the hurricane knocking down wires as they came tumbling down.

Residents in more than two dozen homes were still waiting for power to be restored Tuesday and for the giant trees to be removed from their block. No injuries were reported, police said.

“I understand there was a hurricane……. but people are getting their power back now,” said one resident, who asked his name not be used, but whose house is among the three that are sustaining the felled trees. “How can this not be on top of their list.”

Keith Yehle said the oak tree that fell on the second floor of his house came down Sunday morning, and since then he an his wife have been sleeping in the first floor living room, and he sent one of his two young children to stay at his grandparent’s house. He said the tree damaged shingles and has caused cracks on the wall in his dining room. He said he fears that the tree will cause more damage the longer it stays.

Councilman Erich Fleischmann, who stopped on the block Tuesday, said town officials are waiting for PSE&G to make sure all power is cut off the wires before the trees can be removed.

Palmer Avenue residents said they just want PSE&G crews to start work on cleaning up their street, and restoring their power.

“We are wondering when it will come back,” said Len Rubin, who has lived on the street since 1948. “Most of Maywood has gotten its power already.”

I won't disagree that our taxes have gotten out of control, but in all fairness to the Borough, they are waiting on PSE &G to handle the wires before they can handle the trees.
